Probably the best non-Profit site to record for as practice, as beginners. Even for established VO actors, you have a chance to record anything in the public domain you wish, and have it posted. You won’t own anything recorded (and accepted by the Librivox team of moderators) but it’s a nice way to donate your time, as well as gaining valuable experience in both reading and producing your own recordings.
“The Other Pages (http://theotherpages.org/) is a web site hosting an array of content on writing, images and music. The affiliated text collections include about 8,000 online works of poetry, some 30,000 quotations, and thousands of images.” For people looking for a nicely organized arrangement of Public Domain Poetry, look no further! The other parts of The Other Pages, are very nice indeed as well, so give them a look and your support.
Like the Internet Archive, the Library of Congress is a veritable library of different collections of freely accessible documents to read aloud! Or a literal library that is, or it is what it says it is. The collections will further assist in finding something of interest to read and submit. Recording a little known document from the past of current interest can lead to a wider audience of potential listeners.
Gotta have a source of Public Domain material! The Gutenberg Project continues to be the premier project to digitize as many texts as possible from the public domain, making available works that have been out of print.
Gutenberg not good enough for you? No one’s done a scan into Kindle or Apple or PDF yet? The Great unexplored digital wonders await you at the Internet Archive. If a work has been scanned into digital format and it’s in the Public Domain, then it’s here for the downloading. The copy may not be very easy to read, but it’s a lot easier than looking for it in a rare bookshop.
The Library of Congress also has a branch that supplies recorded books to the Visually impaired, usually through subscribing local libraries. ‘Recording for the blind’, like Librivox, is a wonderful way to donate finished recordings that not only allow one to practice recording and producing, but donating time and making valuable contacts.
